The planting site is located in the Natural Park ‘Parque Rural de El Nublo´, an area included in the Biosphere Reserve of Gran Canaria. The Biosphere Reserve covers approx. a third of the island on the south-western side, including the municipalities of Tejeda, all of the territory situated at an altitude above 300 m. Zones with different vegetation types can be distinguished in the arid and semi-arid environments in the southern and western parts of the island.
The ridges and southern slopes are covered by Canary pine, while the northern slopes host relicts of laurisilva and fayal-brezal vegetation types. The challenge of the trials is to enhance the connectivity between the green patches of the area and improve the eroded soils.
