The LIFE The Green Link project, through the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and GESPLAN, has supplied 100 cocoons to the president of the Heredad de Aguas de Arucas y Firgas (D. Carlos Santana Cubas), an institution that, since 1502, manages the water resources of a significant part of the North of Gran Canaria, allowing expansion of crops that formed the economic history of the island (sugar cane, banana, etc.).
The areas where the cocoon will be tested are located within the Special Conservation Area of the Barranco de la Virgen (39_GC, LIC: ES7010038) of the Red Natura 2000 and in the Doramas Rural Park, where they are currently being carried out. The post-LIFE actions of the LIFE+ Rabiche project (LIFE12 NAT / ES / 000354). This project successfully completed the reintroduction of the “rabiche” pigeon, a specie related to the laurel forest, extinct in Gran Canaria for 100 years and has led to the restoration of more than 200 hectares of this forest, a process that is ongoing and will be stimulated by the use of the cocoon.
