In the Autonomous region of Valencia 2 planting locations were secured. One in Tous in an remote area that has suffered from several forest fires, the last one 3 years ago. Only bushes and small plants grow in this rocky area and a mix of ecologically interesting trees will be planted in order to create a new green area which should give a boost to local biodiversity.
The other planting site is located in the Municipality of Jijona, 25 km north of the city of Alicante. This region is mostly known because of its extensive almond farming that has existed since the 8th century when originally the Moorish farmers cultivated almond trees. However, with time, farming land has remained unused and the land has become abandoned. The challenge is to improve the extremely dry and eroded soils by converting them into fertile soils as well as to offer an economic alternative for land owners.
